Maryam Rajavi is a strong human activist who was born in December 4, 1953. She was and raised in a middle-class family in Tehran, Iran. She grew up among many siblings but the most common ones are her two late sisters and her elder brother Mahmoud. While growing up, she did not have an easy life more so because she was a woman. Most of her youthful life, she experienced violence in her environment as she had to endure the pain of losing both her sisters. Due to this, she had the motivation to start fighting for human rights most especially those that affected women. Who is Maryam Rajavi?

She is one of the most famous women in the world who have worked hard to make room for women in this chauvinistic world. Maryam was born in a family of many siblings: her elder brother Mahmoud who in the past was a prisoner during the ruling period of Shah. However, currently he is a veteran member in the PMOI.

Seeing the pain and torture her elder brother Mahmoud underwent as a political prisoner in the Shah’s regime, she wanted to change so much in Iran. However, this was not her wakeup call just yet. It seems like she needed to experience more distraught and anguish for her to gain strength and courage so as to stand as an opposition of the human rights oppressors.

As if having to endure the pain of her brother in prison was not enough, she had to suffer a double loss of losing her two elder sisters. The eldest sister Narges was murdered brutally by the secret police service, popularly known as SAVAK. Before her death I 1975, Narges had to endure torturing and brutality from Shah’s secret police service.

Massoumeh, her other sister went through the worst ordeal before her death. In 1982, she was arrested, brutally tortured then murdered. At the time of her arrest, she was an industrial engineering student at the university. Additionally, she was also a pregnant with her first child. All these factors did not stop the SAVAK from brutality torturing her and finally killing her through hanging.

As if that was not enough, the SAVAK also killed Massoumeh’s husband, Massoud Izadkhah in cold blood. Maryam saw this as the worst form of inhumanity and that fueled her anger and desire to stand against such violence and brutality against women and men. Maryam knew that for her to have a strong resistance in Iran, she will need to be well-equipped She continued her education at Sharif University of Technology and graduated with a degree in metallurgical engineering.

Maryam Rajavi: Political Life

After graduating from university, she started her political career in the bid to fight against the two most corrupt leaders in Iran: the Shah and the mullahs. She understood that going against such strong and powerful leaders will not be a walk in the park but she did it anyway. She joined the political party PMOI/MEK and boldly vied for a parliamentary seat in 1980. It was hard for her to win the elections as an opposition because of the saturated fraud in Iran at that time.

She held many protests and campaigns to overthrow the Shah who was a dictator. She inspired plenty of women in Iran to stand against oppression and corruption and currently in Iran, there are numerous numbers of women who have been elected as PMOI officials.

Maryam Rajavi and the NCRI

NCRI is a strong political party that leads in the opposing government. The National Council of Resistance of Iran has more than five opposition organisation in Iran. Rajavi Maryam is one of the longest and active serving members. During one of sessions that NCRI held, they decided to elect Maryam Rajavi as the president-elect.

During the entire period that Maryam has served as president elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, she has managed to make great political changes that have positively affected the cultural, political and social changes of the lives of women and men in Iran.

Women have more power than they thought they had and it is now possible for them stand strongly and condemn any vices done by the ruling power. Maryam Rajavi has managed to hold meetings with strong and powerful allies bot from Iran and other different parts of the world. She has had meetings with human activists, lawmakers, prominent political individuals and heads of state from Europe, US and the Middle East as well.

As for Iranian citizens, they perceive Maryam as the defender of human rights and the defender of human rights. In as much as she has not managed to totally eradicate dictatorship and oppression of human rights in Iran, Maryam Rajavi has made it possible for the oppressed to have a voice.
